Collateral

Denotations
One character is holding a gun facing the other
There are two men in the poster
There is a taxi cab behind Jamie fox
The title colour is orange
Connotations
The title Collateral may be coloured orange to represent the taxi which is behind Jamie Fox. This maybe because Tom cruise is sitting down so it looks like his sitting in a taxi cab and is also pointing the gun towards Jamie to either kill him or maybe threaten him. This makes the audience want to watch the movie because they want to see what the story is about.
The poster is focused on just Jamie and Tom also its focused on the taxi this tells the audience that the whole film is focused on them two and the cab which the audience can see they typical thriller characters two middle aged men and you know that there can only be one survivor.
The tagline “It started like any other night” tells the audience that maybe those two met in the night and maybe Tom Cruise was in the taxi, which also explains to the audience why the background is dark because the whole film takes place during the night.

The Town

Denotations
There are four main characters
The title is in red
There are police men pointing their guns towards the shooters (nuns)
The background is blue and black

Connotations
The dark blue sky represents a scary, thrilling scene because there maybe be tension going on or danger is around.
The ‘nuns’ who are shooting make an impact on the audience because we think to our self who are they and is one of the characters at the top of the poster are a part of this group?
The title The Town may be in red because towards the end of the film some of the characters were killed and it can represent that the town is filled with blood and dead bodies.

The two girls in the poster look like typical thriller characters. They look like the damsels in distress because they look worried and seem to be frightened this is where the audience realise that is quiet a serious film and there’s more than just a robbery going.

Title: The A Team
Year: 2010
Director: Joe Carnahan

I have chosen to write about The A Team because i really enjoyed watching this action adventure/thriller film as i have watched this film several times and never have got bored of watching it time after time. This film is filled with a lot of comedy which a lot of thriller films don’t contain and it is far more different then a stereotypical thriller film.
I will be analysing the first 10 minutes of this film in which i will focus on the Editing, Camera Work, Sound, Mise en Scene, Characters and Titles.

The A Team is about 4 American soldiers who are working in Iraq and are sent off to pick up plates for 100 dollar bills which have been stolen to print a billion dollars. They retrieve the plates and later on are then framed for a murder they did not commit. In order to clear their name they must retrieved the plates again.

While watching the opening of this film i spotted a lot of Enigma Codes which are general questions the audience ask themselves while watching the films for example:
Who is he?
Why is getting beaten up?
Where in Mexico are they?

Col. Hannibal Smith is shown to be an intelligent leader who comes up with great plans for his teams missions. He is tough, ruthless and is the eldest and most respected man in the team.
He is first introduced in the film where he is tied up on a chair by two Mexican police officers who he tried to bribe, In order to understand what the Mexicans are saying they have placed subtitles which say “Only a hard headed gringo would come down here on a rescue mission all alone” this suggest that he might be the stereotypical hero who isn’t afraid of anyone and may be a spy/secret detective. The Mexicans decide to shoot him but when using Smith’s gun it seems to not work and they realise that there is no firing pin which confuses the audience because we think why there is no firing pin.
We see that Smith has the firing pin in his hand with close up shot being used and then the subtitles from the Mexicans saying firing pin turns red which indicates that danger may be coming or a murder may take place.
He uses the firing pin to unlock the handcuffs and place it back into the gun which tells the audience how clever he is with using a piece from a dangerous weapon to help himself instead of harm.
He then walks back into the dark when the dogs arrive barking and hungry for meat. But once they entered the dark they come out with their heads cuffed together and whimpering. Later we see Smith coming out from the dark smoking a cigar and The A Team theme music is played with his name being shown on the screen in army type font.

Bosco B.A. Baracas is tough and is filled with attitude, his not a typical thriller hero as he is a black male in his 30’s and is big. This makes the film more unique as it does not go with your typical thriller/action adventure film but does keeps you zoned into the film.
We see police cars chasing a yellow sports car and we see this is a typical thriller scene where we are unaware of what’s going on at first but later realise what’s happening. Baracas then comes out of the sports car where he has arrived at a garage asking about his girl. The man threatens Baracas for not doing his job right and the audience just think his just an average crook but after the man leaves we see Baracas hand touch his head and puts in in a fist where we see his tattoo ‘Pity’ on his knuckles and straight after a fight commences where the audience really pity the group of men who were beaten and bruised by Baracas. After beating them up a man approaches Baracus showing off his moves and well a second after gets kicked and falls into glass. This part of the scene brought a little humour to the film because you don’t want the audience to think this is a serouis film there is humour and action.
Lastly the first man who was talking to Baracas tries bring friendly and attempts to punch him but the Baracas right hand fist ups and on his knuckles the tattoo is says ‘Fool’. Here the audience is very familiar with the faze ‘I Pity The Fool’ which is Mr T’s catch faze and he was Baracas in the original A Team serious. We see Baracas smile when he sees his girl which is a car and we can see the soft and funny side of Baracas.

LT. Faceman Peck is a laid back, romantic and charming man in the group. We first see him locked and stuck in a bunch of tires because he slept with the mayor’s wife; this tells the audience how his character is and may be throughout the whole film. The general tells his people to set him on fire and while talking to him he tells us his part of the army intelligent programme and the audience think to themselves really? His part of the army he seems like a crazy guy.
We see that his plans don’t go well because he was meant to catch the guy but instead sleeps with his wife. This is his character arc because he first spoils his plans up but towards the end of the film he focuses more on his plan and it becomes successful.
The two cops who kidnapped Smith arrive with the money Smith tried to bribe them with and hand it over to the general. The general tells Peck that his rescue mission aka Smith can’t make it and Peck goes on about how they think they got him. Here the audience now understand that Smith and Peck are together but the suspense comes where we think are Smith and Baracas going to make it on time before they set Peck on fire.
Once the general turns his back on Peck we see that while counting the money there’s a tracker on the money which Smith is using and after Baracas car smashes through the fence. Here the audience are just excited to see that they have arrived. But while they enter the petrol on fire and Peck is just stuck and tries to get out of there but the rope which is around his neck almost hangs him to death. Later Smith comes out the car with AK 47 and helps him, this leads to Smith and Baracas to take on the gang on their own which is also a stereotypical thriller scene the hero or heroes have to take on the villains. Smith rescues the girls and takes here into the car, they are about to leave but Peck is still stuck and is rolling down the hill into the car.

Locations
The first ten minutes of the film is set in Mexico. This tells the audience that its quite dangerous there because Mexico is known to be dangerous and filled with danger.
The first scene is shown in a room which looks like a dark storeroom and is a typical thriller scene where the hero is kidnapped in a dark room and the light is shining on him which shows the audience he is the hero also the light represents hope or shows that an angel is there.
The next scene of the car chase is in the mean streets of Mexico and also the poor part of Mexico because you see kids and people playing on the streets. This is also a typical thriller scene because a lot of thriller chase scenes take place in public areas.
The scene in which Smith sees a car in the middle of a deserted area is a place where you would expect no one to be and then you have Smith and Baracas who by chance meet each other is a scene the audience are excited to see that these two are together.

The non diegetic sound used in the first ten minutes of the film is the A Teams theme song. The theme makes an impact on the audience because the theme song is heroic and when it’s played the characters are introduced.
The rest of the opening is filled with diegetic sound like the guns going on fire and this makes an impact because the audience can hear how hard and loud the gunshots are and they feel they are in the scene.

Titles whenever the characters are introduced in the film their names appear on screen in army font. This is because The A Team are part of the audience and they are heroes for everyone. This creates an impact on the audience because of the font we can understand who they are or who they work for.

The target audience intended for this film are people who enjoy watching some action and some who are familiar to the series The A Team and want to whether they can make it better then the series.

I think their main target audience are people from the age of 12 and up because it does contain a lot of bad language but also contains a lot of action which a lot of the younger audience love.

Title: Se7en
Year: 1995
Director: David Fincher

I have chosen to write about the film Se7en because out of all the thriller films I have watched I have to say Se7en is my favourite. The direction and acting was top class and it’s a film where you have to watch out for a lot of clues and foreshadows.
I will be analysing the first 10 minutes of this film in which i will focus on the Editing, Camera Work, Sound, Mise en Scene, Characters and Titles.

Se7en is about two complete different homicide offices Sommerset and Mills who are on the hunt to find a deadly serial killer whose work is based on the 7 deadly sins.
Can the two officers capture the killer before he completes his mission?
When watching the film Se7en there are a lot of enigma codes which go through the mind of the audience for example:
Who is the serial killer?
What is his aim?
Will Sommerset and Mills get along?

We are first introduced to Detective Sommerset in the first scene, we see Sommerset in his kitchen. I notice his kitchen and house is white and clean which represents his pure and likes his house to be neat and tidy.
The next shot is of Sommerset getting ready by putting his tie neatly on and then we see his belongings like his pen, badge etc all lined up which tells the audience how Sommerset is organised when it comes to the smallest and biggest jobs.
The camera then turns to Sommerset about to grab his jacket which is precisely laid on his bed and he notices a little dust on his jacket and wipes it off.  Now here we see that sommerset can spot the smallest and tinniest things. This is one of Sommersets character traits where throughout the whole film he spots the smallest clues in the murder scenes.
The next scene is of the first murder scene in the film and an officer is telling Sommerset what has happened. Sommerset is wondering around the room and sees drawing on the fridge which looks like a child has drawn. Sommerset ask the officer if the children saw anything and the officer goes on how they cant wait to get rid of him. This tells the audience that Sommerset is going to retire and when asking about the children we see his caring.

We then are introduced to Detective Mills he enters the room from downstairs and walks in with his hand in his pockets, in a suit where his shirt and tie looks trampy like he rushed to get to work. This shows the audience how different Mills and Sommerset are because of the way Sommerset is neat and tidy and Mills looks rough and unorganized.
He introduces himself by telling Sommerset who he is and then has a little smirk on his face. The way Sommerset introduced himself while chewing gun was like a child would introduce himself to his teacher.

They next come out of the murder scene into the street and its pouring rain and we see that Sommerset has a jacket and hat on but Mills has nothing which is also another character trait where he never is prepared for anything.
He then looks at a girl walking by which shows he was checking her out which a lot of youngsters do also he has his back towards him where audience see he does not pay attention to Sommerset. Which is another Character trait of Mills where throughout the film doesn't listen to Sommerset.
Sommerset suggests to Mills that they should go to the bar but Mills insist they go to the police station. We then see how excited Mills is to go to work like a boy would be excited to go school on the first day back.
While they’re walking we notice Mills bumps into people and this is another character trait of Mills where he doesn't see what’s ahead of him but Sommerset does.
When Sommerset and Mills are talking Mills throws in a joke by saying “i don’t wanna star by kicking each other in the balls” and laughs but Sommerset does so we see how different the two are.
The relationship between Sommerset and Mills is like a student and a teachers relationship. The way Sommerset is mature and serious and Mills is a rookie and child.
We are next shown Sommerset in his bedroom reading a book in bed and see how his room is quite dark but he has two lamps on. The audience see how intelligent Sommerset is because so far his been smart calm with everything and this is his character trait where the books help him find out about the serial killer and how smart he was to go to the library to find out about the killers motive.
Before falling asleep he turns on his ticker which ticks right to left and the audience see his quite old fashion with the ticker also when he goes to the library to find clues is also old fashioned.

Throughout the whole film we see that the film goes from dark to lighter towards the end.  This film is different from different thriller films this is because it had biblical connotations which not every thriller film contains.

The film is set in California but when you think about California you sunny, beaches and a holiday but we see the darker side of California and a more rough side of it. The director makes us see how bad Sommerset and Mills are trying to capture the serial killer in such a rough area.

Camera and editing
The first shot is a long shot showing Sommerset's kitchen and after the shot is a close up shot of Sommerset doing his tie up looking in the mirror to make sure its done right. This then moves to a POV shot (Point Of View) showing us his belongings and he picks them up one by one taking his time.
We then have a long shot of Sommerset at the murder scene and the camera is focused on him. When walking towards the camera the camera starts moving up which tells us he is older and is superior.
When we are introduced to Mills the director uses a close up shot to show us the impression Sommerset gets off Mills which is he looks messy with his tie and shirt.
Lastly we get a tracking shot of Mills and Sommerset when their having their conversation and walking in the street. This makes the audience feel they are at the scene watching the two.

The start of Se7en starts off really slow and takes time to introduce the characters and tell us what’s going on, which is why there is not much editing in the film just cut shots.

The first scene is filled with diegetic sound when we see Sommerset in his kitchen we hear police sirens going off where audience we how rough the place is and we expect to see hear a lot of sirens going off to find the killer.
In my opinion i think the director purposely adds the diegetic sound in the film because you feel they are actual detectives and you feel you are there.

In my opinion the target audience for this film is people are into mystery maybe the age of 18 to 25 because it was a mature film but also some of the murder scenes were gruesome.

Title: Colombiana
Year: 2011
Director: Olivier Megaton

The reason I have chosen Colombiana   to analyse the first 10 minutes of the film is because I this film is different from all thriller films.
It goes against all Stereotypical thriller films by making a girl the hero and portrays her as tough, fast and strong.
The audience were excited to see how this film will come out and can it change the perspective of women in future thriller films.
I will be analysing the first 10 minutes of this film in which i will focus on the Editing, Camera Work, Sound, Mise en Scene and Characters

The film Colombiana is about a girl out for revenge from the man who killed her parents and ever since she was a little girl she's been very intelligent and skilled so this helps here in the future to get justice for them.

When watching this film I had seen a lot of Enigma Codes  and thought of some which are general questions the audience ask themselves while watching the films for example:
Who is the little girl?
Has her dad been training her for this day?
What is her goal?

The film starts off showing the poor area of Colombia. While showing Colombia we see little shots off people taking drugs and see the army escorting and killing people. The audience automatically think this film may be about drugs and killings which is right because the men she kills they are all drug dealers.
We also see money which represents greed and we see how she doesn’t care about the money she just wants justice.

Colombia – 1992
We see a nice house and a lot of the security guards securing the house and we also see a swimming pool. In my opinion i think the swimming pool can foreshadow how one of Cataleya (the main character) victims was killed and they are killed in a pool by a shark.

We then see 2 men having a conversation in a house where there's a lot of security. We think maybe they might be important or are in politics. They talk about how they’re going to miss each other and how one of them is a father figure the other is like a sun and the audience think they have a deep relationship. Don Luis Sandoval says last have one last drink this foreshadows how this is actually going to be Fabio Restrepo last drink before he gets killed.
Fabio gives Don a memory car and don ask if he has a any other copies but Fabio says no. So we see a lot of tension and we kind of get the feeling that they don’t trust each other.
Don gets up and hugs Fabio and kisses him on the forehead like a blessing to his son. In a way we think how a father would hug his child before he leaves so it foreshadows that his going to die.

After Fabio leaves Don says to his partner go kill him so the audience now wonder why is he going to kill him and he may not trust him like the father he looked him as. We see the betrayal a lot of typical thriller films have. When Fabio enters his car he realizes that Don didn't buy his friendship and figured out he might go against him. This brings in the suspense because we want to find out what’s going to happen?
Fabio decides to quickly go save his family before Don reaches him and Fabio leaves his men to guard the house so no one can harm his family. This tells us more about Fabio’s character and how much he loves his family and would never leave them.

We then are shown Fabio’s family his wife and daughter, we automatically notices how Cataleya (his daughter) is dressed in her school uniform and looks as if she’s come back from school and like a little student is doing her homework and drinking her milk.
He informs the family that they have 10 minutes and here we see that the family is already prepared and were expecting this one day. Also how Cataleya is always prepared and foreshadows that she’s prepared for anything.

Next we see Fabio looking for the memory card and then hands it over to Cataleya with a card. He explains to her that the memory cards is her passport and when shes reaches the gate give the card to them. Also he gives her an address in Chicago if she ever gets lost to go there and never forget where you came from.
This foreshadows how when she runs from the killer she follows her father’s instruction. Also we think to ourselves that the father may think his going to have to leave her and they may never meet again which is also another foreshadow.
Don’s men arrive and Fabio is forced to leave his daughter and go try to escape and for the last time tells Cataleya how much he loves her and leaves. We the audience feel for Cataleya because in the first 6 minutes of the film we have bonded with Fabio and Cataleya and we feel how much she’s hurt to see this.
Don’s men shoot the guards and make their way. After Fabio and his wife leave we see Cataleya just sitting at table having to hear the gunshots and maybe hear her parents being shot to death. We also see her reaction when the gunshots go off and she’s about to cry but she then holds her tears back. Now in this scene we wonder what’s going on in Cataeya’s head but through her eyes and facial expression we can see that she’s trying to be strong.

Locations
The start of the film is set in Colombia and we see the poor area of Colombia which tells the audience this might be based on a dangerous situation because of the place its shot and that the main character may be poor.
Fabio’s house is shown to be a typical place for a middle/poor class family live.

There is mostly non diegetic sound in this film; it starts off with action type thriller music to show tension in Colombia.
When we are shown Don’s house we hear opera music this tells us because of the fact his rich he may listen to snobby/classic music because of his status.
While Fabio and don are talking we hear birds chirping which is diegetic sound and is there to show us how peaceful the area is and you feel you are there.
The music then starts to speed up when Fabio realizes dons after him so this is added in to show the tension and suspense building up. But when Fabio reaches his house the music goes and it’s all peaceful this can represent how Fabio is going to miss his home and its peacefulness.
The diegetic sound of the guns is to show us what Cataleya has to listen to and you feel her. Also when they show Cataleya’s expression you hear sad music which makes the audience upset.

 Camera work and editing
When Fabio and don are talking we see that the director has used shot reversed shot. Where we see them talking but from different angles. This allows the audience to see their facial expressions and we feel we are there.
When we are shown Cataleya we see the camera zooming in and then cuts to a close up shot of her face. This allows the audience to see her reaction towards hearing the gunshots.

Empire

Empire magazine has been around since 1989 and for past 25 years has been covering upcoming blockbusters to show on the celluloid, empire is a magazine on films that have or are going to be released from the Hollywood industry. films from Raging Bull to Captain America have all embraced the cover of empire. not only they talk about films but they feature interviews, quiz's, talks and much more all what a film lover would want.

I have researched the empire magazine and have seen the on going style. A typical empire magazine would have the main character(s) in the center of the cover. The empire title (Masthead) would be place on the top of the cover in red and the puff would be in small text under the title. A sticker (Pug) would be placed anywhere on the cover wherever convenient. Cover lines are mostly in the center but depending on the actors placed on the magazine could also be placed on the corner.  the empire website is always placed underneath the bar code and the banner is placed on top of the cover lines which are around the cover.

The mast head like i said before is always placed on the top of the cover in red. The reason why the empire title (the logo) is in large is because they want the audience to know that they are going to buy or read an empire magazine and because they have been around for 25 years empire has become a huge successful magazine that for film lovers is a big deal as they contain all film news they want.

the puff which is 'still the worlds biggest movie magazine' makes effect on the buyer because if they are checking the magazine for the first time then they wouldn't know that empire has been around for a long time but because when they see the puff they know that they just haven't given the name themselves but were given the name purposely.

The main cover picture (which in this magazine is of Captain America) has been placed in the center. Now Captain America 2 at that time was a big release as it is a Marvel release and for the past few years Marvel films have has been successful and Empire is known for making big movie releases as their cover. If you reflect back on the past covers you would notice that a part of the main image for example the characters head would cover a letter from the master head so the main image could stand out and you would know its still stays empire.

The main article in a magazine is always featured on the cover of the magazine and is called a cover line. The cover line of this magazine is 'Captain America' as it relates to the main cover picture this is because the main focus and feature in this magazine would be of the Captain America film. The cover line is smaller then the mast head but this is because there are more features in the magazine and they are in smaller fonts but like i said before this article is the main focus. Which is why its also placed on the sides its separate to the smaller ones.
The banner on the top of the cover line writes 'Exclusive'. A banner is used on a magazine cover to inform the reader what article is very important and as you can see the captain america article is exclusive as they might have first hand information on the film.

Lastly you have the pug. a pug is like a sticker shaped as a circle which is like a bonus article in the magazine you need to know about. Here it is of the 25th anniversary of empire magazine and for readers its interesting to see how long they have come so they might check the article.

The rule of third is imagining dividing the image into thirds. It can either be horizontally or vertically. With the grid you can see what’s important in your image and as you can see the empire magazine has used the rule of thirds for their magazine cover. the main focus is on Captain America's face, the cover title and he special feature on the other side.

Sight & Sound

Sight and Sound magazine has been around since 1932 but was recreated by the BFI in 1991. The magazine focuses on not just the main stream cinema but worldwide releases from the Japanese to the French industry. The magazine targets more of a minority audience who take film very seriously and look in depth into the film and is the only magazine to the full cast and credit. They also feature films that have been released many years ago but still review for their audience as they would then go on to see the film. They also focus on the filmmakers and go on to interview them as for their audience they are the stars.

The BFI (British Film Industry) is an organisation that focuses on the film and television culture.

After carefully researching the Sight and Sound magazine I noticed that the magazine has two different layouts. The first layout is the one above where the main image is in the center of the magazine, the main cover line is below and below that are the cover lines. The second layout is where you would have the main image on the side or corner of the magazine and the Sight and Sound masthead would be in a yellow box. Also the cover lines would be in the corner on top of the main cover line. Here is an example.

The masthead writes 'Sight & Sound' like I said before always changes and this is the first layout where you would just see the name alone with no background. The font always stays the and you would always see that the '&' sign is always red. The masthead in both layouts is placed on the top of the magazine. The strap line tells you that the magazine is not just focusing on a particular audience but an international audience that live for film.

The main cover picture which is here of the character from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey is placed in the center of the magazine. The image is a still taken from the film and most of the time the magazine uses a film still for the main image as they do focus on the film and what it features. Now the film was released in 1968 and like i said before sight and sound likes to feature old classic films to talk and review about so fans of the film would really be interested in buying the magazine.

The main cover line is related to the main and image and above it tells you what the article is about which talking about the creation of the film and the audience who from years ago wouldn't have got the opportunity to read behind the scenes.

The cover lines are placed below the main cover line. Sight and Sound are always focused on worldwide cinema and from the cover lines you can see that its not just the big blockbusters out in cinema but films you would see in small cinemas or film festivals. They also mention the directors who created the films and this maybe because the audience may know and be fans of the directors which would lead them to buy the magazine.

The rule of third is imagining dividing the image into thirds. It can either be horizontally or vertically. With the grid you can see what’s important in your image and as you can see the sight and sound magazine magazine has used the rule of thirds for their magazine cover. The main focus is on the main image and in the second block in the first row '&' is focused as its part of the masthead. As I said before sight and sound has two different layouts.

The rule of third here is different to the first one. One of the main focuses on the magazine is the BFI on the top right hand corner. This is important as the magazine is own by the BFI and its main focus is on film so the audience can find out more about the BFI after buying the magazine. The second important focus is on the cover lines on the left hand side in the middle row. The cover lines are of different film articles that are featured in the magazine some films may not sound familiar but this is because the magazine covers worldwide cinema and the audience would now this.
